Opening a Data File

To open a data file, Classic Data File Tools must be able to identify the file type and the record type and lengths. For non-indexed files, this information can be read from a profile file, or supplied as prompted. For variable-length sequential or relative files, and for indexed files, this information is read from the file header. See Data File Profiles for more information

Note:

You cannot open a data file if you have the Back up file before editing configuration option checked, but do not have sufficient space for the backup file.
To avoid modifying data accidentally, you can open a file as read only.
