From your IDE, there are a number of functions that you can perform on the mainframe data sets. Some of the functions depend on the type of data set you are actioning, for example, compression is only available for partitioned data sets.
Editing an item
From the IDE, you can edit and save the contents of a mainframe data set member.
Opening an item in an external editor
You can open and edit certain types of data set or data set members in an external editor. The default external editor is Notepad, but you can configure access to other editors.
Deleting a data set
Delete one or more selected data sets from the mainframe catalog.
Compressing a data set
Compress partitioned data sets to remove space between the data set members.
Allocating new data sets
You can manually allocate new partitioned or sequential data sets to the mainframe catalog.
