Opening an item in an external editor

You can open and edit certain types of data set or data set members in an external editor. The default external editor is Notepad, but you can configure access to other editors.
If the Mainframe Explorer window is not displayed, click View > Mainframe Explorer.
  1. In the Mainframe Explorer window, log on to the mainframe.
  2. Expand the required search filter to display the data sets.
  3. Expand the required data set to show its members, if applicable.
  4. Right-click the required data set or member, then click Open with > editor name. Depending on the type of item you are opening, an additional dialog box might appear.
  5. Complete the required fields, then click OK.
Tip: For help completing the fields, click Help in the dialog box.

The item is displayed in your editor. If the editor is configured with the Save mainframe edits option checked, the changes you make in the editor are saved back to the mainframe.
