View the Data File Unformatted

To view the data file supplied with the project, load it into Data File Editor:

1. From the Micro Focus Data File Tools window, click File > Open, then navigate to the DataToolsDemo project directory.
2. Select datavseq.dat, then click Open.

   The Open Data File dialog box appears.

3. Ensure the Structure File (optional) field is empty.

   Note that the File Details section is populated with values; these are taken from the file header of the .dat file.

4. Click Open Shared.

   datavseq.dat is opened in Shared mode and its contents are displayed. In Shared mode, the file is opened with a file locking status of shared, allowing other users to open the file in Shared mode.

   Each record is unformatted; that is, it is shown as one continuous line of text. Records are easier to view and edit if they are formatted; for that, you need to create a record layout within a structure file, then apply it to the data file.

   Note: Some characters that cannot be displayed correctly are displayed as a period. You can still display the hexadecimal code for each of these characters, by clicking (Toggle Hex).
