COBOL Help within the IDE
Tips on getting Help on COBOL when using the IDE:
- COBOL syntax, library routines and Compiler directives. In the COBOL editor, put the cursor anywhere within the reserved word, routine or directive, and then press
F1.
- Error messages. In the output pane, put the cursor on the error message number and press
F1.
- Tooltips. Hover over an item in the COBOL code or over a field or control, by leaving the mouse pointer on it for a moment. A brief description of it may be displayed, either beside it or at the bottom of the window.
Help in Microsoft Visual Studio
The Microsoft Help on using Visual Studio is comprehensive and detailed and includes many samples as well as extensive reference material and more. If you are new to Visual Studio, we recommend that you explore the Microsoft Help and follow the tours and introductory material there.
Tips on using Help in Visual Studio Help format:
- The locally installed Help has not been updated since the first release of
Studio Enterprise Edition 6.0.
- You can choose to display only the Micro Focus Help, or to display it integrated with the Visual Studio Help, by choosing the appropriate option from the Start menu.
- You can choose whether to search the local or the online Help. To do this, click
Tools > Options > Help > Online and choose the option you require.
- You can filter the Help to show just a subset in Contents and Index. For example, you can choose Micro Focus
Studio Enterprise Edition from the
Filtered by: drop-down list on the Contents tab. It is quick to change filters, whenever you need a different subset of the Help.
- You can filter Help searches to search just the COBOLHelp. To do this, select COBOL from the
Language drop-down list on the Search tab.
- The Help topic being displayed can get out of step with the Contents, such as when you choose the topic from the Index or when you link to it from another topic. To show where the topic appears in the Contents, click
Sync with Table of Contents on the toolbar.
- For full details of the Help system, see the Microsoft Help.
HTML Help in the
Net Express IDE
The Help for Net Express is available from the Help menu in Net Express and also from the Start menu from
Start > All Programs > Micro Focus Studio Enterprise Edition x.x > Compatibility Tools> Net Express Help. This Help has not been updated since the first release of
Studio Enterprise Edition 6.0.
Tips on using HTML Help within the IDE:
- If you look up information using the index, you don't necessarily know where the topic you find belongs in the hierarchy of information. For example, is the topic part of the deploying Help or is it to do with preparing an application for deployment? You can find out where an indexed topic belongs, by clicking the
Contents tab.
- The contents on the left usually points to the topic you are reading on the right. Sometimes, if you follow a series of links in the Help, the contents gets out of step and points to the wrong topic. To bring the contents back in step, click
Locate at the top.
- You can display or hide the contents and index, by clicking
Show or
Hide at the top.
- In the contents, book-style information has book icons, whereas topic-based information has folder icons.
