Modernize your Mainframe Application with Reflection Desktop and Enterprise Server

You can use Micro Focus Enterprise Developer to specify that certain fields in your mainframe application are required or sensitive fields. Required fileds do not allow the applcation to go to the next screen unless data is entered on those fields. Data in sensitive fields is redacted.

You can create required and sensitive fields when using Enterprise server version 7.0 and Reflection Desktop version 17-0 SP1 and greater.

Mainframe applications can be difficult to update as business requirements evolve, and typically don’t provide an end-user experience that you’d see in modern web and mobile applications.

For example, not requiring end-users to fill out critical information, like a cardholder’s name, can lead to less than optimal outcomes.
		
Missing data can cause errors. And allowing unredacted data to be visible may not be compliant with GDPR requirements and other security mandates.

A common behavior that web developers build into their SaaS applications is to require specific fields be populated in a web form before the user is permitted to submit the form. 
		
They also typically redact sensitive data like credit card numbers after the data is entered.

Let’s take a look at how you can use Micro Focus Enterprise Developer and Reflection Desktop to modernize the user experience for mainframe applications.
		
We’ll set up our application so that it doesn’t allow users to go to the next screen unless the “Name” fields include data.
		
Then we’ll set the CCN “Card number” field to be data sensitive so that it redacts all but the last four numbers of the credit card we entered and redacts data as we type it in.

In the Enterprise Developer BMS Painter tool window,  we’ll select the Surname field and open the Field Properties dialog box. 
We’ll specify that this is a Required field.
		
And then we’ll set up the First Name field in the same way.

Now we’ll specify that CCN is a sensitive field and then choose to redact all but the last four numbers of the data in this field. We’ll also redact numbers as we type.

When you change properties in the BMS Painter tool, it automatically changes the source code – so now we can just rebuild the application.

Now let’s check our work.
		
Back in our application, when we add a credit card, all but the last four numbers are redacted and the numbers are redacted as we type them in.
		
And if we try to go the next screen without entering data in the Names fields, the application doesn’t allow it and indicates these fields are missing data.
		
Now the record has all the information we need and sensitive data is redacted.
