3.6 VMware

3.6.1 Overview

VMware vSphere is VMware's virtualization platform, which transforms data centers into aggregated computing infrastructures that include CPU, storage, and networking resources. vSphere manages these infrastructures as a unified operating environment, and provides you with the tools to administer the data centers that participate in that environment.

The two core components of vSphere are ESXi and vCenter Server. ESXi is the virtualization platform where you create and run virtual machines and virtual appliances. vCenter Server is the service through which you manage multiple hosts connected in a network and pool host resources. For more information about VMware vSphere, see VMware vSphere Documentation.

VMware Horizon provides centralized desktops and apps which ensure strong security with no data residing on the device, streamlined patching, complete access control, and the delivery of trusted images every time. For more information about VMware Horizon, see VMware Horizon Documentation.

A full clone is a complete and independent copy of a virtual machine. A full clone shares nothing with the parent virtual machine after the cloning operation. Ongoing operation of a full clone is separate from the parent virtual machine.

Because a full clone duplicates only the state of the virtual machine at the instant of the cloning operation, it does not have access to snapshots of the parent virtual machine. For more information about Full Clones, see VMware Fusion Documentation.

3.6.2 Architecture

Figure 3-2 DSfW Interoperability with VMWare

The integration of DSfW with VMware enables DSfW users to access full clones that is created based on the rights assigned by the administrator.

For the integration of DSfW with VMware, VMware components such as VMware Horizon connection server, database, and golden image were joined to DSfW domain. Pointed vCenter to DNS of DSfW domain and added compatible ESXi as a host in vCenter for the cloning.

The integration is tested and verified using OES 23.4 with VMware Horizon 8.9.0-21593375, vCenter 7.0.0.10100, and ESXi 7.0.3.

For more information, see Domain Services for Windows (DSfW) integration with VMware.
