6.3 Migrating from iPrint Appliance 2.x to 4.1

When migrating an appliance the data from the secondary disk of earlier appliance is used to setup the new appliance. We only support disk-based migration from 2.x to 4.1 versions. The earlier versions (1.x) cannot be migrated directly to 4.0 due to changes in the base infrastructure. These changes were done to provide enhanced features. You must migrate 1.x to 2.x using zip file and then migrate to 4.1.

6.3.1 Applying the Migration Enabler Patch

This patch contains all the prior updates (up to patch 10) which have been released for iPrint Appliance 2.1. This patch also includes an update required to perform the upgrade to iPrint Appliance version 4.1.

  1. It is recommended to take the snapshot of the current configuration so that you can revert the snapshot in case of error.

  2. Download the file iPrint-2.1.0.Migration_Enabler.zip from the Micro Focus Download website.

  3. On a Web browser, use either the host name or the IP Address to access the Management Console. For example, https://10.0.0.1:9443 or http://iprint.example.com/admin.

  4. Specify vaadmin or root as the user name.

  5. Under Appliance Configuration, click Field Patch.

  6. In the Path to Field Patch, browse to the downloaded zip file, then click Install.

  7. Reboot the iPrint Appliance server. On successfully applying the patch, iPrint-2.1.0.92.HP.zip is listed under Manage Installed Patches.

  8. Take a backup after applying the Migration Enabler Patch. For more information on taking a backup, see the Backing Up the Appliance. This creates a iprintconfig.zip that will be used during migration.

6.3.2 Migration Process

  1. Shut down the earlier appliance.

  2. Deploy iPrint Appliance with any virtualization software that can run the .ovf, .vhd , or .xen file formats.

  3. Attach the secondary disk of the earlier version of the appliance. This disk includes the configuration file (iprintconfig.zip) of the earlier appliance that was generated in Step 8.

  4. Power on the appliance.

  5. On the Console tab, enter the root and vaadmin password for the new appliance.

The iPrint Appliance installation is now complete. The new appliance is configured with the same IP and network settings.

  6. On a Web browser, use either the host name or the IP Address to access the Management Console. For example, https://10.0.0.1:9443 or http://iprint.example.com/admin.

Ignore the security certificate warning, and continue to the iPrint Appliance Management Console. To avoid the security warning prompt every time you access the iPrint Appliance Management Console, you can add the certificate to the trusted certificates list on your browser.

  7. Specify vaadmin or root as the user name.

  8. Specify the password, then click Log in.

  9. Click Migrate Existing iPrint Appliance.

  10. The iManager user name field is pre-populated and not editable. Specify the iManager password that was used to configure the earlier version of the iPrint Appliance. This password will be used to log in to the iManager for managing the print environment.

  11. Click Finish.

The time taken to complete the configuration depends on the size of the earlier version configuration file. On successful migration, the appliance reboots the VM.

The configuration file of the previous appliance is renamed as previous_iprintconfig.zip.

6.3.3 Post-Migrate

  • If you have an existing remote renderer, then post-migration of appliance, the renderer might be in an inactive state. To make the renderer active, stop and restart the renderer. After activating the renderer you must upgrade it. For more information, see Upgrading the Remote Renderer.

  • If you had synchronized the user information from your directory server (eDirectory or Active Directory) to the iPrint Appliance 2.x server, then post migration, you must synchronize it again with the iPrint Appliance 4.1 server.
