Changing Display Fonts

The following section discusses how you can customize to change the font displayed in your session window.

You can change the display session font to:

  • Use a different font type

  • Use a different font point size

  • Automatically resize when your resize the display session window

  • Automatically resize the display session window to best fit the selected font size

Because this display emulates a VT terminal, resizing the window will never allow you to display a page wider than the defined number of columns (either 80 or 132).

The Settings - Font General Page

On the Font General page, you can change the size of the text in the emulation window. Select a font size from 3 pixels wide to 24 pixels wide, or Auto. If you select a fixed font size, and Autosize Window is also selected, the window size is based on the font size. The Auto Size selection uses a font size based on the window size.

The font size for a 132-column display is automatically selected, based on the selected 80-column font size.

Setting

Description

Font

Select the display font you want to use. Only monospaced fonts are displayed. Fonts displayed in the list are available on your system, but might not contain special characters you require.

Size

Select a font size from 3 pixels wide to 24 pixels wide, or Auto. The Auto selection uses a font size based on the size of the session window.

Margins

Select either Wide or Narrow to adjust the margin width in your display session window. Select Wide to use a wide margin setting where characters are centered in your display window. Select Narrow to reduce extra margin spacing around the text by expanding characters and distributing them using the entire window area. This makes text more readable.

Select wide, narrow, or none to set the margins.

Auto Size Window to Font Size

Select this option to use a window size based on the selected font size.

Exclude Incompatible Aspect Ratio Fonts

Excludes fonts with incompatible aspect ratios (the normal height-to-width relationship of the characters). Some scaleable fonts have an unusually large or small number of characters per inch because the image of each character is stretched or squeezed horizontally. Because this stretching and squeezing can make a scaleable font less attractive, selecting this option will allow Extra! to only use fonts that are readable.

Allow Raster Font Scaling

When selected, raster fonts can be scaled. Raster fonts are fonts that are stored as bitmaps.

To resize the window, keeping the full width of the page in view

  1. From the Options menu, choose Settings.

  2. Under Categories, choose Font.

  3. On the General page under Size, select Auto.

  4. Use your mouse to drag the window borders until the window is an appropriate size. Do not maximize the window. The character size is adjusted to show exactly 80 (or 132) columns of text in the window.

    -or-

If you want the application window to fill the entire desktop, choose the maximize button in the upper right corner of the window, or double-click the title bar. The window fills the desktop, and the character size is automatically adjusted to fill the window.

NOTE:If you select Auto under Size and Autosize Window is also selected, you can drag the window borders until the window is an appropriate size. The character size is adjusted to display 80 (or 132) columns, and the window is adjusted to display 24 lines.

To choose a character size that does not change with the window size

  1. From the Options menu, choose Settings.

  2. Under Categories, choose Font.

  3. On the General page, ensure that the Autosize Window option is cleared, then select a character size other than Auto under Size.

  4. Use your mouse to drag the window borders until the window is the size you want. The window will show an integral number of characters, up to a maximum of 80 (or 132).

The character size will not change, but parts of the VT page may be hidden from view.

NOTE:If you select a character size other than Auto, and Autosize Window is also selected, the window size is adjusted to show exactly 80 (or 132) columns and 24 lines of text, based on the selected font size. You cannot change the size of the window by dragging the window borders.
