To browse data in an IMS database

  1. In the IMS Database Editor, select a segment type on the Tree view; then click get first with hold to retrieve the first segment. The segment position icon go to current segment shows next to the retrieved segment.
    Note: Alternatively, issue a different DL/I call to ensure that a segment is loaded. The segment from which you start the browse must have a unique concatenated key.
  2. Optionally exclude or include segments. See To exclude or include segments in a browse session.
  3. Click Start Browse go to current segment.
  4. Do any of the following:
    • To move forward one page, click *.
    • To move back one page, click *.
    • To return to your current database position, click go to current segment.
    • To view key, data, and hex values on the Data Information bar at the bottom of the Browse window, click a listed segment occurrence.
  5. To close the browse session, do one of the following:
    • To end the browse session and maintain your current position in the database, right-click in the Browse window and select End Browse from the context menu.
    • To end the browse session and immediately edit the current segment occurrence, click Go to segment  .
Note:
  • At any time, you may apply segment layouts. When you move from one segment to another, the segment layout view is updated to show the data for the selected segment occurrence.
  • You can change the number of segments that appear on each browser page by setting the Number of segments per browser page option.
  • The following rules apply when browsing:
    • You can only browse through the database one page at a time.
    • You cannot browse backwards through the database beyond your start position.
    • You cannot edit data during a browse session.
