The remote system needs a definition of the terminal from which the transaction is issued. You can either:
- Define the terminal in the remote system as well as the local system. This method is known as duplicating a terminal definition.
- Ship the local definition to the remote system when a transaction is routed to the remote system. This method is known as shipping a terminal definition.
3270 terminals and printers default to the shipping method, but you can duplicate the definitions if you choose.
With either method, each terminal name must be unique across the entire network.
Shipping definitions has some advantages over duplicating definitions:
- You can save on the use and maintenance of disk storage on the remote system because the remote terminal definitions are not stored there.
- You also save the initial labor of entering the remote definitions on the remote system.
