System Architecture Options

Enterprise Server for .NET installations have three primary architecture configuration options:

A single machine running Microsoft SQL Server or Server Express, and the Enterprise Server for .NET software.
Multiple non-clustered machines using a single Microsoft SQL Server. Each machine uses the same Microsoft SQL Server installation.
Multiple clustered machines using a single Microsoft SQL Server.
This configuration increases capacity by scaling out an installation. See the section on scaling out an Enterprise Server for .NET configuration.

You can also configure multiple non-clustered machines with different Enterprise Server for .NET components. For example, you can have a number of listener machines and a number of processing machines. The listener machines do not perform any processing other than running the listener.
