The database administrator is expected to establish a regular schedule for backing up locations and their log files. The frequency of backups depends on the frequency of database updates, the importance of data, and the difficulty involved in recreating the data. You should always backup a location during special operations, such as after using the COMPACT command or before installing a new version of XDB Server software.
Backups can be performed using the BACKUP LOCATION command or by using an operating system backup command.
If you operate a location with recovery turned on, log files are maintained (ideally on a different disk drive). The log files contain after images of records that were changed by database transactions within the location. In the event of a system failure, the log files can be applied to the latest restored backup of the location to recover the changes recorded in the log files. The XDB Server provides a ROLLFORWARD command for this purpose.
