Introduction

The repository holds information about all the types of objects that the Directory Server controls. These are:

It is vital to keep the repository available and secure at all times. You should export the repository at regular intervals, preferably to a remote location, whenever you have made a change that you wouldn't want to lose. You can then restore from the latest export location if a system failure causes the loss of some of the data in the repository. We recommend that you export the repository only when all the registered servers have a status of "Stopped", as otherwise you are in effect taking a snapshot of a running system. If you have to restore from this export location, the snapshot will not necessarily correspond to the actual statuses of your servers, for example, one or more of the servers may not be running. When you restore, you have the option of ignoring the state of the servers when they were exported and restoring them with the status 'Stopped".

By default, only information about enterprise servers is saved. If you want to include CCI servers in your backups and restores, you can specify this on the Configure Options page.

If you have made changes to a particular server, you can save just the information about that server and its objects.

Note:

If writing to the repository fails (for example, if the disk is full or the LDAP repository is no longer accessible) a message, highlighted in red, is displayed in the status area near the top of the Enterprise Server Administration screen. The message is also added to the Directory Server Journal.
