Administering Server Enterprise Edition

You can configure and administer Server Enterprise Edition using the Enterprise Server Administration tool. This allows you to view and change information about the enterprise servers managed by the Directory Server. You access Server Enterprise Edition Administration from a Web browser.

Once you have configured Server Enterprise Edition, you can use Enterprise Server commands for some administrative tasks, as an alternative to using the Web interface. For more information about the command-line interface see the chapter Servers .

Administration activities can be divided into two categories: occasional and day-to-day. Once your enterprise servers are fully defined, with their services, service listeners, request handlers and implementation packages, there should not be much to do on a day-to-day level.

Occasional tasks include:

• Configuring the Directory Server
• Creating objects: services, request handlers etc
• Deleting objects
• Redeploying services

Day-to-day tasks include:

• Starting and stopping servers
• Editing objects as required
• Changing the status of other objects in response to events, for example, disabling a listener in response to a network problem
• Monitoring performance and tuning the system to maximize it, for example, increasing the number of service execution processes in a server
