Chapter 3: Licensing and Deployment

This chapter summarizes Server Express licensing and the licensing implications of deploying your applications for use in a production environment.

Licensing Overview

Your Micro Focus Server Express license allows you to develop and execute applications for your own use. However, it does not allow you to deploy these applications to end users in a production environment.

Applications developed using Server Express require a run-time environment in which to run. Micro Focus offers two products for this:

Enterprise Server for UNIX includes Application Server for Server Express.

Setting Up Licensing for Server Express

Server Express will run only if a valid license is present on the computer. You receive a License Key Card when you first buy Server Express. This is normally not time-limited and is valid for a specific number of users. You have to install the license key into the license database before users can start using Server Express. You can add more license keys later to give access to additional users.

For full information see your Development System Licensing Guide.

When Do You Require Enterprise Server and Application Server Licenses?

You need to purchase an Application Server or Enterprise Server license before you can execute a Server Express application in a production environment, whether the application is for internal use or resale. Please contact your Micro Focus sales representative for details of the Application Server and Enterprise Server licenses available.

You require an Enterprise Server license if any of the following apply:

For all other deployment scenarios, you require an Application Server license. The only time you do not require Application Server or Enterprise Server licenses is when either of the following apply:

For information on licensing conditions see the license agreement supplied with Server Express or see your sales representative for further information.

Setting Up Licensing for Enterprise Server and Application Server

A license for Enterprise Server or Application Server is called the Enterprise Server (ES) or Application Server (AS) license. When you obtain Enterprise Server or Application Server, you receive a License Key Card. You need to install the license key printed on the card onto your system. This card has printed on it a license key, which enables you to install the license onto your system. Unless the license is installed, the system is unaware of the license, and you will not be able to run the applications for which you have obtained the license.

For a full explanation of licensing, see your Deployment Licensing Guide.

Licensing Additional Software

Micro Focus Server Express includes additional products as part of the development system, some of which are owned by other vendors. If you wish to distribute these additional components as part of your application then a separate additional license may be required according to the license agreements of those products.

Other third party software is included with Server Express. For further details please refer to the Third-Party Software Terms and Conditions section of your licensing agreement and contact the appropriate vendor.
