Variable Format Relative Structure

A relative file with variable-length records follows the basic variable structure but each record is placed into a fixed-length slot, the length of the slot being the length of the longest record defined, plus the header and terminator characters.

The record header for each record contains the length of the logical record written, not the length of the physical fixed-length slot.
