one of those permitted under the rules of COBOL syntax, or if it is then you have failed to enclose it in quotation marks.
The literal must be a single character, not a digit, and cannot be any of the following, A B C D L P S V X Z * + - , . ; (
) " / = or space (except in ANS85 where L is valid).
Resolution:
Change the literal to a permitted character and ensure that it is enclosed in quotation marks.
