Tutorials: OpenESQL Assistant

In this set of tutorials, you create an application using OpenESQL Assistant to generate a skeleton COBOL program, an SQL query to embed into that program, and to generate and embed an INCLUDE statement for a generated copybook that defines host variables. It also takes you through the process of customizing the program code, and debugging the resulting application.

Tutorial Requirements

To complete the OpenESQL Assistant tutorials, you must have the following software installed:

  • Enterprise Developer for Eclipse
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or later, including the SQL Server Management Studio

Additional requirements that apply to a specific tutorial, if any, appear in a Requirements section in the tutorial topic.

Order

You must complete this series of tutorials in the following order:

  1. Tutorial: Create a SQL Server Database
    Create a SQL Server database using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
  2. Tutorial: Create and Configure an Eclipse Project
    Create and configure Eclipse COBOL project in which to create an application.
  3. Tutorial: Set OpenESQL Assistant Configuration Options
    Set configuration options for the OpenESQL Assistant.
  4. Tutorial: Catalog a Connection
    Catalog a connection to the database you created in a previous tutorial.
  5. Tutorial: Build and Test a Query
    Use the OpenESQL Assistant to build and test an SQL query.
  6. Tutorial: Generate and Embed an SQL Program
    Use OpenESQL Assistant to generate a generic SQL program to run the query, and embed it into an existing COBOL program.
  7. Tutorial: Provide Additional Code
    Add code to the generated SQL program to include a generated copybook and to send the returned data to the console in a readable format.
  8. Tutorial: Debug the Application
    Set a break point, and debug the application.
