RM/InfoExpress

Client/Server Connectivity

With RM/InfoExpress, even the most complex computing task won't be slowed down by your local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN). This powerful, new file management system enhances information transfer across networks to make sure your productivity stays up to speed. Working with the network's own operating system and operating transparently, RM/InfoExpress vastly improves RM/COBOL performance for sequential, relative, and indexed network file access.

Remote File Access with No Change in Object or Source Code

Installation is simple.

  1. Pick the version of RM/InfoExpress designed for your type of network.
  2. Designate a server containing data to be shared.
  3. Install the appropriate RM/InfoExpress programs on the server and client systems.

A given client is able to access up to 14 active servers simultaneously, and each server supports any number of clients.

RM/InfoExpress requires no additional program statements and no changes in object or source code. The utility is immediately applicable to all RM/COBOL programs that require enhanced data access performance across networks.

Server Now Locks, Searches, and Unlocks

Any transfer of information will result in some time delay due to the communication protocol overhead and the physical distance between the client and server. As network activity increases in complexity, so does the network delay. Complex searches through indexed files (involving index trees in addition to the locks, unlocks, and access of the actual data) can result in severe slowdowns.

RM/InfoExpress, however, places the responsibility for record locking, unlocking, and tree searches entirely on the server, reducing much of the network data delay because only the actual record is being transferred across the network.

And, if you use RM/InfoExpress with enhanced RM/COBOL v6 or higher, you'll work even faster. Changes have been made to the RM/COBOL file system to improve general performance of file I/O. The software also includes a test suite that will show you the performance enhancements achieved by using RM/InfoExpress.
